There is a future, a time to come that will reach beyond all we see today. Our hope is for that day. We live this Christian pilgrimage for that time. Our promises were never to be completely fulfilled or satisfied in our natural life. But in eternity, more than we could ever conceive with our human intellect will be ours as we lay down the burdens of these days forever and step into glory the natural man cannot fully comprehend. Watch for that day. Be ready for that day.

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matthew 24:42

“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” Mark 13:33

“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

“And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.” Luke 12:37-40

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4

“Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joyΒ shall beΒ upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy;Β andΒ sorrow and mourning shall flee away.” Isaiah 51:11

Do Your Best | Motivation Monday

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” Colossians 3:23

In Matthew 25 there is the parable of the talents. Some were productive and some were not. The ones who were, the master blessed with even more. The one that wasn’t lost everything.

We only get out of this life what we put into it. “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully,” (2 Corinthians 9:6). I believe this principle can apply to every area of our lives.

Too many are looking for blessings without putting their best foot forward. Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

God honors the persistence and diligence of those who work to put their best foot forward: “For the labourer is worthy of his hire” (Luke 10:7). He rewards those that do their best. Whether in the parable of the talents or in Colossians 3:23, when we do our best, heartily, and bountifully, we can look forward to reaping the best.

If you don’t like what you have been reaping, check to see what you have been sowing. Have we been half-stepping or given it our all, “as for the Lord?”

Life can be overwhelming sometimes. Ask God to help you with your daily schedule and the work you must do and DO YOUR BEST TODAY! Don’t let your talents go to waste!

Change Your Perspective

“Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.” Acts 8:4

Is the glass half empty or half full? This question determines whether one is a pessimist or an optimist.

How we view things determines how we categorize them, and how we categorize them determines how we deal with them.

For those in the early church, the persecution they encountered could have been categorized as disastrous. The afflictions they faced brought real suffering, and decisions had to be made for individuals to leave their homes and places of comfort and flee. But in the fleeing, something amazing happened: Their faith went with them.

The cause of Christ that burned within refused to be extinguished. Rather, through the hardships they dealt with, it found a place to grow.

In the scattering of the faithful, more people were introduced to Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The situations you face today may not be pleasant, and you may not fully understand how it can work out for your good (Romans 8:28), but God does, and He is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” (Ephesians 3:20).

Father God, I may not understand everything I encounter today, but I know that You always have my best in mind, and it is in Your hands I place my trust. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, I pray, AMEN.

“When my spirit was overwhelmed…”

“When my spirit was overwhelmed…” those are the words David wrote at a very tumultuous time in his life.Β  He spent many days on the run, hiding, with his life hanging in the balance because the current king, Saul by name, had it in his mind to kill David without a second thought.Β  Therefore David ran, with many days running together into a blur of trying to stay out of Saul’s target range just to remain alive.

Some of those running experiences took him to a certain cave.Β  David was known for staying in a cave referred to as Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1).Β  This was a hiding place for him, but it was also a gathering place for his brothers and those from his father’s house to join him.Β  Some others who were also in “distress” and dealing with other issues of discontentment of the way things were joined forces with him as well in that place (1 Samuel 22:2).Β  There, David became a captain over this group of men, but also there, David prayed.

A life spent hiding in a cave and on the run is not a life anyone with a promise on him would deliberately sign up for.Β  But, this is where David found himself and it was overwhelming.Β  He has already been driven into the wilderness.Β  He had already escaped the throw of a javelin more than once that was purposed to end his life.Β  He had already dealt with a king whose anger, fear, and jealousy were eating him up and caused him to eye David with a suspicion that made his every step miserable.Β  He knew if he didn’t flee he would die and if he didn’t pray to the only God who could comfort and strengthen him through this whole situation, he would collapse because he was weak from it all.

That was one of the special things about David: he knew how to pray (Psalm 142:1-2).Β  He knew how to take everything he was facing to the Lord without hesitation.Β  It didn’t matter if he was dealing with enemies such as Saul, or if he was dealing with his own sin (Psalm 51) – David knew that there are times in this life that are just plain old overwhelming, and rather than get crushed, he prayed to the true God who could redeem him from the crush; who could lift him above that trials and the storms, and strengthen and heal the brokenness he was dealing with.

In that, David knew all that he was going through had never escaped God’s notice.Β  Every heart-rending prayer, every night of dealing with the unease of another attack from Saul, and every moment that caused him to be anxious over his situation, David confidently believed and stated, “When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path,” (Psalm 142:3).Β  Trouble may have seemed like it was following him everywhere he was going, but so were the eyes of God.Β  There was never a time when he was off of God’s radar, and neither are we.

Listen, we may not be hiding in a cave, but there may be other things that we are dealing with that cause us concern, and make us feel weak as if the world is crashing in us.Β  We may be in our own cave experience without a cave, but the same God who knew the path David was on, is the same God that knows the way you take also.Β  Psalm 139 assures us that God sees every part of us and He knows everything about us.Β  He knows our beginning from our end.Β  He sees.Β  He knows.Β  Our paths are not hidden from Him.Β  Everything is opened before Him!Β  Every trial, every test, every burden that you carry, and every overwhelming thing you are facing, God is very much aware of it all.Β  As our Sovereign, Heavenly Father, you dear child of God, are on His mind, and He knows.

He knows how hard it is for you right now.  He knows when the paths they push you on is unfair.  He knows the tears that you have cried all night long.  He knows the heartbreak that you constantly face.  He knows when some are against you and try to tear you down.  He knows it all.

When overwhelmed, David found comfort in releasing the pressure of everything he was feeling into the only hands that could truly help.Β  He released all his worries and pent-up frustrations into the hands of God.Β  He prayed and poured out every burden he was carrying at the throne of grace.Β  When nobody else stood with him, he prayed to the only God who would be there with him through the thick and thin of life, and he placed his confidence in Him.

Though situations may have tossed him about, they never tossed his faith.Β  David stayed planted with his hope steadfastly anchored in God.Β  Friend, whatever overwhelming situation you are facing today, I pray that you would mimic the steps David took in dealing with the hardships of life, and take it to the Lord in prayer.Β  And, not only take to Him in prayer but keep your hope anchored in Him as well.

At the end of David’s Psalm 142 prayer, he stated boldly and confidently, “For thou shall deal bountifully with me,” (vs. 7).  David knew, in the end, faithfulness always wins out.  We may not be able to personally do anything about some of the stuff we face, but God can.  If we don’t quit; if we handle our “overwhelming” moments by remaining secured in the God who can save, heal, and deliver – no matter what distress or hardship we currently face, in the end, God has the final say over it.  Believe as David believed and trust God through it all.

Life can feel overwhelming at times, but nothing we face will ever overwhelm God.Β  When everything seems to come crashing down all around you, God is the one who can raise you above it all.Β  Every dark night, He can turn into a day.Β  In times of mourning, He can bring comfort.Β  In the days when you see nothing but ashes, He can make it into something beautiful.Β  In the cave experiences of our life, we can find hope, because He knows and will be there with us through it all.Β  “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I,” (Psalm 61:2).

What to do with days when things just aren’t going right?

What to do with this day when things aren’t clicking and time keeps ticking?Β  When things refuse to fall into the designated places you had for them?Β  When it feels like it’s completely squashed before it starts?Β  So many plans lay ahead but the weight, the feeling, and the pressure of it all leaves one with a sense of having things unaccomplished and unfulfilled.Β  To look on the outside, it seems that everyone else is getting on with this day and their doings, but the fight in here, right now, and the press that comes with it, it just doesn’t seem to want to work out.Β  All the gears for all the mechanics of this day are present, in place, and spinning, but they are just not grabbing correctly to move what we are trying to achieve successfully.

What to do with this day when there seems to be conflict and strain with one another?Β  When relationships don’t hug the way you want them to hug or love in a way you want to be loved?Β  When misunderstandings, assuming, and yes, even one’s own personal views on a matter put barriers between the spirit of fellowship and love.Β  When hurts cause one’s steps to move ever so fragile as if on eggshells, fearing the disappointment and disapproval of someone else?

What to do with this day when rogue feelings break away from the pack you had planned for the day and invade and try to rob you of the potential joy that lay ahead in the hours to come?Β  Thieves of insecurity.Β  Thieves of shame.Β  Thieves of feeling woefully torn.Β  These thieves come with many hideous and damaging names.Β  The day was brand new and fresh at the start, but that didn’t stop these unwanted parasitic nuisances from latching on and tainting it with the feelings of mess-ups, adversity, pain, and disappointments from your yesterdays.

So, what to do with these kinds of days when our plans, people, or feelings just don’t want to cooperate with the vision you had set for it?

Give it to God!Β  That one answer tells us how to deal with it, the proper response to it, and what to do with the rest of it.Β  This is not some Christian rhetoric or cliche.Β  It is a solid truth that we can stand on and base our faith upon.Β  We give it to God.

The real truth is that at any given time on any given day, we will all or have all experienced one or many of the daily upsets listed above (and sometimes even more than these).Β  It is all a part of life, a part that can really throw us off-kilter if we don’t process it right and deal with it in the right way.

Therefore, when everything is going absolutely bonkers, sometimes without rhymeΒ or reason; when nothing within our power or control is working, we give it all to Him who has all power and control.Β  Not as a mythical genie creature whose bottle we rub to have things or people turn out how we want them to.Β  But, as releasing it to His majesty and sovereign will.Β  It’s saying, “I trust you, God.”Β  Whether this day turns out how I configured it or not, my plans, my people, my times, my heart, and my feelings are all in Your hands.

God is not only the Creator of all the universe and the Author of all mankind, but He is concerned about your daily needs for each individual day also.Β  All the areas that need filling, all the upsets that need dealing with, all the plans that need to be taken care of, and all the worries that bog us down – He’s concerned about it all.

But, as we release the day to Him we must also realize His best answer for us may be to not move everything or anything into the places where we see fit.Β  Sometimes, His best answer for what we are going through with this day is to let us learn from it, experience it, and still maintain trust in Him.Β  Regardless of how it goes forward, despite what we feel in the process, no matter who we are dealing with and how we are dealing with them – He still sees it all, knows it all, and has it all in His loving and powerful hands.

So, when days like this come, we give it to God, step back, and just trust Him for every part of it.

Here are some verses and prayers to hold in your heart when the days just aren’t going right for you:

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Father God, I acknowledgeΒ that I don’t know everything about this day, my future, or even how to properly respond to it all.Β  I pray for Your leading to show me the right path to walk so that my life might be pleasing in Your sight.Β  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Father God, the end of all things may be vague to me or even remain a mystery.Β  Help my heart hold on to the very real fact that You knew me from the beginning and You know how my story ends; and that if I am in Your hands, then I am in Your plan.Β  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Psalm 126:6 “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”

Father God, my tears and confusion for the day, You see it all.Β  Help me to know that it is not all in vain.Β  Let my confidence be in You and Your love for me above all else, knowing that for every sadness, there will be joy.Β  When You restore, for every sorrow sown there will be a reaping of happiness and peace.Β  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

You are not forgotten! | An Isaiah 49:15 Devotional

β€œOh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;” Job 29:2

Have you ever experienced these same thoughts that Job expressed?Β  Have difficult times ever made you look back to times when you felt everything in your world was right?Β  When adversity strikes and we deal with things we do not understand, I am sure many of us like Job take our mind’s eye to those past days when trouble wasn’t knocking on our door.

The difficulty of the days he was presently in caused Job to look at those previous times as times of favor, saying, that’s when β€œGod preserved me”.  But now, his expressions tell a different story of what his feelings are feeling.  His troubles caused him to think that just because he was going through adversity, God was not as presently with him as before.

Little did Job know, and many times we need to be reminded, that just as God was with us in the good times, so too is He with us in the troubling times.Β  It may look different than we are used to seeing it, and it may feel different, but just because we don’t understand and may question it, it doesn’t negate the fact that God is presently near, watching, and keeping His people.

Jesus taught, β€œAre not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6-7).

A bird sold is not forgotten before God, and neither was Job, and neither are you.Β  Our value before God is so precious and more than we could ever imagine.Β  The clouds that come during those dark days may try to hide that fact, but the truth of God’s Word is a fact, that no matter how we feel or how hard it may seem, God is still there for us.Β  Even if you are dealing with hurtful situations and even if you feel like you have been wronged, God’s loving eyes see and His precious hands are working behind the scenes, holding you, loving on you, and valuing you when others may not.

Difficult times are difficult because they are not easy.Β  During these times, see Him with eyes of faith.Β  See that He is still with you and that you have not been left in this alone (Hebrews 13:5).Β  Take your cares, your disappointments, your hurts, and your discouragements to God in prayer.Β  He is there listening.Β  And trust me, He does care.

Just because it hurts it does not mean He’s not feeling what you are feeling (Hebrews 4:15).  And just because we can’t figure out all this stuff, God knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), and we must trust Him with it, and with all the times in between.

God is here for you today, God is here.Β  Regardless of what you feel or are going through, you are not forgotten.

β€œCan a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” Isaiah 49:15

“Be Hopeful!”

β€œFor thou art my hope, O LordΒ God: thou art my trust from my youth.Β  By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.” Psalm 71:5-6

Dr.Β  Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, β€œIf you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on despite it all.Β  And so today I still have a dream.”  Β Life goes on and dreams fade.Β  Aspirations and ideas that were once prevalent, now sit in a dusty corner of our sub-conscience only to be peeked at from time to time.Β  But, what we are learning is today, that does not have to happen.Β  Today we can remain hopeful.Β  That it’s not too late!

Hopelessness kills this world.  It’s like a ravenous disease spreading from individual to individual, house to house, community to community, city to city until everywhere we look all that is seen is what looks like people drowning in the distresses of this life.  Barely holding onto a fading thread of what could be in order to make it through another day.  There is no vigor for or in life.  It’s just a daily trudging through, each step getting harder and harder.

No wonder so many give up and are found sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else go by.  An individual can attend a thousand motivational seminars but if he walks away without true hope then nothing was accomplished.  No real help can come of it because without real hope, as Dr. King stated, β€œyou lose the vitality that keeps life moving.”  But, when one can begin to get a glimpse of what could be, through faith, through the eyes of God, they can begin to see that there can be a greater tomorrow, or better yet, a greater day today for them.

I believe this psalmist knew the secret.Β  As dismal as life can be sometimes he knew that there was a reason to believe that this all would get better.Β  All he had to do was view the evidence of the working hand of God that was already performed in his life.Β  He said, β€œYou are my hope. .Β  . my trust from my youth.”  The fact that we have made it this far from way back then is proof of His sovereignty over our lives. Β By His strength, we have been blessed to be here today to tell of His goodness; to say, β€œI have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.”  So, “my praise shall be continually of thee.β€œ

You have a reason to remain hopeful.  This is not the final chapter.  There is more to your story than this.  I don’t believe God brought you through this far to not complete what He has in store for you.  β€œBeing confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6).  It is not over yet.  We still have hope!

You can declare, “Today will be different.  Today I make the choice to ignore all the negative stuff that’s trying to override the promises of God.  Today, I turn my back on my problems and turn my eyes to Jesus, ‘the author and finisher of our faith,’ (Heb. 12:2).  I have more important things to occupy my mind with rather than all of these trials and tribulations.  All I have to do is remember how He has kept me thus far.  Remember, how He has brought me through to see this day.  Then, I can have hope that what He did once before, He’ll do it again.”

Hope!  Stay anchored in Him, β€œWhich hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,” (Heb. 6:19).  He shall not be moved.  Therefore, since He is not moved and I am in Him – I shall not be moved.  Hope!

Never stop being hopeful for with it comes possibilities.  Believe what you can’t see.  Grab hold of what you can’t touch, and hope!  If you still have a dream then there must be hope to feed it.  Who knows what you will be capable of doing unless you give yourself a chance and remain hopeful.

Her Name Was Deborah!

I bet you’ve never seen a bee like this one before, but as sure as this is the meaning of her name, this industrious lady of the Bible took care of her hive.

Wayward in heart and misdirected by sinful intentions describes the children of Israel after prominent leaders such as Joshua passed off the scene. It was then, that the people found themselves in a vicious cycle of sin, repentance, and deliverance, only to be repeated over and over again.

When they continued to travel out of the will of God, God would allow His people to experience times of adversity through the means of some outside force, usually via oppression from other nations.Β  During this adverse period, the people would humble themselves before God, and God would extend His mercy by sending a deliverer their way in the form of what we call β€œjudges.”  These leaders of the day would not only be conveyors of what God had to say to the people at that time, but they would also be the instruments God would use to orchestrate their deliverance and bring them out of whatever trouble they currently found themselves in due to their disobedience.

When the judge God used for a particular deliverance passed off the scene, the disobedient hearts of the people usually found themselves entangled once again in idol worshiping and sin, and suffered another set of adverse conditions until God called another judge into action to rise and bring the people out once more.

The choice of discipline the people faced in Judges 4 was throughΒ β€œJabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor” (Judges 4:2) who for twenty years “mightily oppressed the children of Israel” (4:3).

It was then, the Bible notes, that there was an unusual woman in the land of Israel.Β  She was not only a wife, being married toΒ β€œLapidoth,” but she was a judge, a leader, and considered a prophetess.Β  Her name wasΒ β€œDeborah” (Judges 4:4).

Not much is known personally of Deborah outside of Judges 4-5.Β  We are not exactly sure how she received her calling from God to step into this place of leadership, but we do know that her ears and her heart were opened to God and He used her in a mighty way to not only bring about deliverance for the children of Israel but to also effectively lead them when theyΒ β€œcame up to her for judgment.”  She was likened, in her and Barak’s song found in chapter 5, as a mother who arose in Israel (Judges 5:7); a woman who cared for her people and her God, and believed through His leading and power they could do what God said they could do.

So, there she was foundΒ β€œunder the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgement” (Judges 4:5).Β Β I wish we had just an inkling of Deborah’s age (Was she aged with wisdom, or was she young and spunky, or was she somewhere in the middle but not given to mediocrity?), but we are not privileged with that information.Β  Her story is not about statistics or the status quo (of which she was not).Β  Her story was of faith and longing to do right for God and man.Β  By gender, she may not have been the typical deliverer for Israel, but by faith, her story shows that God doesn’t put limits on who He can use or not.Β  Sometimes, He thinks outside of the box and throws off the stereotypes to use the one whom we may least expect.

Are you a Deborah? Called into an unusual position during an unusual time?

Do you carry the burden of people and situations in your heart? Do you care about what God wants to do through the lives of others, and even your own life? Do you seek to be open to His services and to be helpful to those around you? Then, you may be a Deborah.

While your name may differ, the stirring in your heart is the same. While the roles you are functioning in may not look the same, the fact that you are seeking to function in His will for the benefit of God and man may qualify you as a Deborah.

In her, we see leadership.

In her, we see motivation.

In her, we see an open vessel ready to be used by the Master.

In her, we see a heart that will not fear or back down from the challenge.

In her, we see poise and caring, but she is also a force to be reckoned with.

In her, we see a faith that refuses to be extinguished by the circumstances of the day.

For one whom we don’t know much about, can we glean a lot from her short story represented in the pages of Scripture.

Unlike some around her, she was not a hesitant leader (Judges 4:6-8).Β  Her name may call her as a bee, but she was lionhearted, sure, confident, and decisive and she literallyΒ rose to the occasion when her people needed her the most.Β  She was a spiritual champion.Β  I don’t believe she would wield a sword, but she sure wielded her faith.Β  She had no qualms about going where God already told them they would have the victory (Judges 4:9-10).Β  She could readily agree with the psalmist, saying, β€œThe LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” (Psalms 118:6).

Her confidence in God showed through her decisions, leadership, influence, judging, and prophecies (Judges 4:14).Β  β€œThe fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe,” (Psalms 29:25; see also Psalms 118:8).Β  She may have been a woman, but she was not a wavering woman.Β  She stood flat-footed and held on to the Word of God.

Through her guidance and encouragement as a godly leader, her people gained the victory over their oppressors and lived in peace for the next forty years (Judges 5:31).

Her name is Deborah. Read her story in Judges 4-5, and be encouraged by the tenacity of her life.

“The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.” Judges 5:7

Surrender

When you try to control everything, everything is only controlled by your limited capacity. But when you loosen your grip, and place it in God’s hands, He can work something wonderful, beyond your wildest dreams.

Sounds nice, you might say, but it’s easier said than done.

I think we’ve all been there at one time or another, a time when what we know and read in the promises of Scripture is asked to come alive in our hearts and actions. It’s a call to let go. Surrender. Give up, in the very best way, of trying to figure everything out and pretending we have all the answers, and freefall into the arms of our loving God who is omniscient, who is all-powerful.

It is totally trusting, not in our own abilities, but in His who has never failed to catch the one committed to trusting Him.

It may challenge you. It may stretch you. It may call for courage that you are not used to exhibiting, nevertheless, let go, and trust.

Relinquish control, and give room for God to work.

Father God, I am not perfect in wisdom and understanding, but You are. I lay it all at Your feet and trust Your guiding hand in holy surrender. I pray for Your help through it all. ”Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,” (Matthew 6:10). Amen.

“Trust in theΒ LordΒ with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

“Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” ~ Psalm 119:133

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” ~ Philippians 4:6

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” ~ 1 Peter 5:7
