Surrounded by Mercy

“Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.” Psalm 32:10

There are many times when we face whatever is we must confront, we can become overwhelmed. We feel surrounded by the cares, by the problems, and by the struggles of the day.

But for the one who has God as their trust, the Bible says, “Mercy shall compass him about” (Psalm 32:10).  What that means is for the person who is sold out for God, for that one that has Christ as the anchor of their life, they are surrounded by His mercy.

Mercy exhibits God’s favor in our lives.  Mercy shows us God’s love on display.  Mercy does not give us what we deserve; instead, it gives us the best of God’s heart when He forgives us, restores, and calls us into deep fellowship with Him.

When the LORD met with Moses to give him the second set of the tablets with the Ten Commandments inscribed upon them, He, Himself, descended in the cloud (Exodus 34:5), and a part of what He spoke of Himself, says, “The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…” (Exodus 34:6-7a).

While the rest of the verse goes on to tell us, “And that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation” (Exodus 34:7b), we see that the one who has attached themselves to the Father and are committed in their ways before Him, “His mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation” (Luke 1:50).

Throughout the Bible, we have these blessed reminders to structure our lives with and build our faith upon, such as the one found in 2 Samuel 22:26 that says, “With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.”

All these stand as true testaments of His love.  They let each of us know that out of the many things that may have tried to surround you today, and out of all the things that have craved for your attention and tried to disrupt your peace, let it be God’s mercy that shines in you.  You, my friend, are surrounded by it.  Let its truth radiate in your heart and your very being, for it is there.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” Psalm 23:6
