Devotion | “I Come Quickly!”

Once, while attending Bible study, this verse in Revelation 22:12 became a point of reference.  But, as I perused through the rest of the same chapter I noticed those words written in red, indicating Jesus speaking, were written exactly the same way three times: “I come quickly,” (see verses 7 and 20 also).  This really got my attention for any good Bible student knows that if Jesus repeats anything it means to take special heed to it.  This statement which is triple repeated is as a warning siren beckoning one to be aware of what’s about to happen.

Preoccupation with this world has so many in its clutches and has lulled multitudes into a false sense of security.  How many of our waking hours are spent on the temporary trappings of now instead of the glory that awaits our future?  Our time on this earthly sojourn is not infinite.  Time will pass.  Days will turn to night and eventually, at our proper time, we will step into eternity or as some say, when Jesus cracks the sky – then, it will all be over.

Will we be ready or caught unawares?  On more than one occurrence that coming day and the Lord Jesus Christ are described as happening by surprise as if a thief came in the middle of the night (1 The. 5:2, 4; 2 Pet. 3:10; Rev. 3:3; 16:15).  Just as suddenly, the end will arrive.  There will be no processional heralding His coming as during the time of His triumphal entry.  Only what is heard in 1 Thessalonians 4:16, but by then, it’s already too late.  The preachers, teachers, and sharers of His Word are heralding now from the pulpits, at the street meetings, and witnessing through the many avenues available even as we speak.  Rather, without warning, He shall appear.

At that time we will all be forced to answer for the life we lived while here.  What will our story tell?

As much as mankind tries to dismiss the truth of the second coming or sweep it under a spiritual rug – it will happen.  Jesus is coming back.  Now is the time to get ready.  Tomorrow is not promised.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus,” (Revelation 22:20).

“Decorated in Glory”

Being called to the front of the assembly to receive awards of excellence was one of my greatest joys in my private elementary school.  One year I excelled in every category, so instead of receiving multiple name calls of recognition – I was given one all-encompassing award.  I remember not liking it one bit.  An over-all award meant specifics were not being named in front of my peers and others, and I didn’t have the pleasure of playing the role of jack-in-the-box in my seat with my constant popping up and down to receive individual accomplishments.

As we get older in life we realize every achievement does not need to come with applause or recognition (at least, not here on earth anyway).  But, in heaven, your works are going to be rewarded.  You and I are going to be decorated in glory.  These rags of humanity will be replaced with robes of righteousness.  As a soldier being medaled for victories, we shall be adorned and dressed in the finest of the heavenlies, telling our story of overcoming.  We made it through and now He speaks, “My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be,” Revelation 22:12.

Take heart.  What you do today may escape the notice of man but the eye of the Lord sees it all.  And, when we get to that heavenly city we will have all the recognition we will ever need.  For it is there we receive the greatest thing no earthly prize can give: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord,” Matthew 25:21, 23.

And, that’s all the glory one needs to be decorated with.

In That Coming Day

Darkness, hatred, bitterness, and conniving schemes may seem like they have the upper hand, but there is a coming day when all the works of evil will tremble before the King of all kings.  What appears as sin reveling in victory now will face the ultimate truth of its demise.

Here’s the bold fact.  There is an end to everything here on earth; whether one chooses to believe it or not will not change that fact.  Fact is, everything will be opened before the true judgment of God (Ecclesiastes 12:14).  Fact is, wickedness will bow before holiness and injustice will succumb to wrath.

The enemy may smile now, but be confident dear friend for we know how the story ends.  Hurts and travail will NEVER have the final say.  There will be a marching in of victory for those in Christ!

The world has made us, the saints, out as naught, but the truth is, in Him, we are valiant and strong.  We have a glorious destiny of promise.  The battles that seem to knock us down today will run and hide in that coming day.

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in,” (Psalm 24:9).  Power is here, and He is coming!  Authority is here, and He is coming! Dominion is here, and He is coming!

The enemy today has us concentrating and fighting one another that we not focus on his evil schemes.  Reminder: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places,” (Ephesians 6:12).  But, in that coming day, when our victorious Christ rides in, the enemy you see today you will see no more.  He will be bound and crushed (Revelation 19-20), and the newness of the promises of God will come alive like never before (Revelation 21-22). 

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work,” (Revelation 22:12, NKJV).  “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20, NKJV).
