One of my fondest childhood memories was going down to the piers overlooking the harbor and watching the tugboats come in and out (even now I am moved by the nostalgia of it). Sometimes these boats are alone, but at other times they were guiding bigger ships through the busy harbor waters to dock safely.

Big ships are powerful, but the ins and outs of navigating the harbor can be tricky for them, so they need to be led instead of trying to move in their own strength and power.

What an image of our spiritual life!

Many, when they get up in the morning and go about their day, that’s what they do – move in their own strength and power. They navigate their day according to their natural wisdom, knowledge, and understanding as if they are the end-all of that day’s plan. Never once stopping to think, is this what God would have me do today?

A person who is Holy Spirit-driven knows that “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Ps. 37:23). They have the assurance that  His anointing is guiding them through the day. Yes, man can make plans and goals, but he who is Holy Spirit-driven seeks God’s intervention. He seeks His guidance. He seeks to be led by Someone outside of himself: “Lord, is this what you would have me do today?”

Who, today, can admit to needing a little more direction in life? Are you tired of being burdened by trying to manage the ins and outs of life while still trying to maintain control? That is not God’s plan for us. If truth be told, we don’t know the ins and outs of everything.

God knows this, and He has given us His Spirit to help lead and guide us on our spiritual journey.

It is amazing to think that we can go on a spiritual journey without the Spirit. How would that work? Unfortunately, since the Fall, mankind has continually sought to be led by his own understanding. But God offers us help. He offers us the power not only to walk through this journey but to make it to the other side. No matter how mighty and invincible one thinks he is, humanity can’t do this on his own.

Question: Is there any area where you may not feel as complete and whole as you need to be? The cause may be that God’s Spirit is not being allowed to move and work as needed. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 instructs us to, “Quench not the Spirit.” Don’t get in the way of what He wants to do through you. Don’t put out the fire of God’s power. Let Him become like a roaring flame on the inside, spilling over to the outside, and spreading to every area of your life.

God is concerned about you, my friend. Jesus said, “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16-17). This Comforter is here. This Spirit of truth, Who will not lie, but will lead us correctly and powerfully, is here! Won’t we let Him do his job?

If God knows we need Him. If Jesus knows we need Him, why do we refuse Him?

Joshua 9:14 is a portion of Scripture that has always stuck with me. Basically, Joshua and the elders were hoodwinked into making a covenant with those they were meant to conquer. They had to live with that decision because they “asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.” They did it in their own strength and understanding without being properly led.

Too many of us make the same mistake. Going about with our own plans, our own understanding, without asking, “What does God think about this?”

We could save ourselves a lot of undue stress if we would step aside for a moment and let Him do His job. We need to get out of ourselves and be led by the Spirit!

“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” This is a verse that I have personally repeated to myself. A prayer, if you will, to be led by His Spirit.

Vintage Discovery: Hope for the Hurting August 26, 2026

My friend, are you hurting today? Has the load become too heavy to bear? Do you need a healthy dose of encouragement?

In this week’s installment of Vintage Discovery, I pray that in your hurting, you will find hope as we revisit Dear Bruised Reed…

Dear Bruised Reed, God’s got you.  Some days may be harder than others, but He’s here for you.  You may stand in need of restoration; that’s okay.  He is able to provide that too.  If peace has moved away from you, He is able to call it back into your life.  If love has sidestepped you, He Himself is love, and has satisfied all the requirements of love, and is able to make it reign in your life again.  He can turn all the hurt and disappointment you are feeling into joy.  Everything may not always work out the way we want it to, but it will work out for our good (Romans 8:28).

Dear Bruised Reed, I’m not promising you there won’t be days of tears and that everything will always be alright, for Jesus Himself said in the world you will have trouble (John 16:33). But what I can promise you is that when you are God’s child, you can still have hope in the midst of whatever it is you are facing.  You are not forgotten.  He sees everything.  And you are so incredibly loved through it all.  Restoration is always in His hand for the heart that will turn to Him for healing today.

Dear Bruised Reed, whatever it is, take it to the Lord and let Him in on what’s going on (1 Peter 5:7).  Pour out your heart before our Savior who cares.  He loves you and wants to see you walk in the victory He has secured for your life through our Lord Jesus Christ.  As quick as it is to worry and complain, with the same quickness we can unload the burdens of the heart and be free.

Dear Bruised Reed, trust in His judgment today.  He has never failed a case, and He won’t start now.  Nothing escapes His notice, and it is His truth, His will, and His way that will always win out in the end.  Never lose hope in what God can do in your life.  His mercies and compassions fail not (Lamentations 3:22).  We are here today because of God.  We are loved by God.  We are covered by God.  And God is the one who will see us through when we rest our lives in His grace.

Dear Bruised Reed, Jesus Christ is waiting to be your ultimate source of true peace today (John 16:33).  Turn to Him.  Trust in Him.

“A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.” Isaiah 42:3

“But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; And charged them that they should not make him known: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.  He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.  A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.  And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.” Matthew 12:15-21

Restoration Can Be Yours Today!

Restored. Forgiveness. Made new. Justified. Recovered and redeemed. All these words speak of wrongs committed being made right. Not because of our goodness. Oh no. Nor was it accomplished on one’s own merits. But because we have a Savior. Because we have Jesus, who took every part of every wrong, who took every part of every curse, who took every part of every judgment for us, and with His body and His life, nailed it all to that cursed tree (1 Peter 2:24).

There was nothing left that He did not cover. No sin escaped that nailing: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Friend, the recovery is here for you today. Jesus already did the hard work necessary to build you back up, to change you, and to give you the chance to walk in the love of God and in a right relationship with Him once more.

When the lies rise, speaking contrary to His truth, say with those of Israel, “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me” (Micah 7:8). The truly repentant will find solace in the truth that it is God, Himself who wants to see you restored more than anything else.

There may have been a stumbling, but don’t stay down. There may be a mark on the record, but grace speaks and says, “Get up.” Yes, there may even be sin, but confess it, repent from it, and allow forgiveness to urge you to keep on going.

Restoration says there is still a call on your life to be fulfilled. Walk in it: “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again…” (Proverbs 24:16).

“Again” says that restoration is yours today. You can find healing for your inner man in Christ Jesus: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

2 Chronicles 7:14 declares, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

God wants to heal people of their sin-sick ways spiritually:  “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:9).

Above, I quoted 1 John 1:9, which was written to a church of believers who already knew Christ as their Savior and were being encouraged in their faith against false teaching.  If you want your confession to work and your inner man to be healed, you must be born again: “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God,” (John 3:5).  “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost,” (Acts 2:38).

Restoration can be yours today!

If Paul and Silas could pray in a dungeon…

If Paul and Silas could pray in a dungeon surrounded by misery and pain (Acts 16:25-34), what great circumstance restrains our hearts from reaching out to the healer of hearts?

If Jonah could cry out of the dark place of the deep, inside the belly of a great fish because of his own disobedience (Jonah 2:2), what great darkness is stopping your voice from searching for the one who can bring light?

If Daniel could knowingly endanger his own life and would face a den of lions, still felt the need in himself to pray and give thanks to God (Daniel 6:10), what stops us from doing so even amongst the pressures of life we may be facing?

If our Lord, with everything within Him, prayed until great drops of blood flowed from His brow before the suffering of the cross (Luke 22:44), what great trial hinders you from drawing closer to the one who can see you through the trial and meet you on the other side?

Corrie Ten Boom, remembering the days she and her sister spent in the concentration camp in Germany, recorded in The Hiding Place the words of her dear sister before her death: “There is no pit so deep He is not deeper still,”1 (Ten Boom, 1971, p.240) showing that God’s love, mercy, strength, and power can penetrate the harshest and most severe of circumstances.

May our hearts continue to reach for Him regardless of the trials we face.

In all the examples, God was there performing His perfect will. Some walked away, while the stories of others ended differently. But even through the worst, God’s name was magnified, and a greater end to their story was birthed.

Do not let what you see today discourage you from seeking the face of the Father. In the good times and the bad, He is still there through it all.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39

Resistant to Change?

“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” Genesis 12:1

Well, are you, my friend? Are you resistant to change? For so many years, I have been. It’s like when I get comfortable, settle in, and establish a good routine in one area, the winds of change begin to blow, and, truthfully, I did not like it one little bit.

But every time I faced certain challenging changes, I found something on the other side of change: a newness I longed for and didn’t know I needed, and didn’t know how to obtain it.

Here’s the thing: in so many areas of life, if we hold on to the old with a tooth-and-nail grip, we actively resist the new that God wants to show us. That which is comfortable may feel good (or not), but it doesn’t mean that’s where you can grow and be everything God has for you.

Abram was uprooted from everything he knew to walk into everything he didn’t know (Gen. 12:1), but it was in this season of change that his life would be radically altered. He would be prosperous beyond his imagination. If he had resisted this change, imagine the domino effect that would have had on history and salvation’s story.

But because he was willing to walk where God was leading him, he became known as the father of faith (Galatians 3:7), God’s friend (James 2:23), and the line through which the story of our salvation would be fulfilled (Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:8, 14, 29).

The plan that God has for you may not be Abraham’s plan, but it is still monumental and important for what He wants to do in your life, and through you.

Change can be joyous, but it can also, at times, be difficult and unwelcome. No matter what side you lean on, lean on God in trust and faith as Abraham did while He works your story out.

During times of uncertainty and change, the prayer of my heart is, “Here I am, Lord. I don’t know what’s going on or what will happen, but here, I am.”

How do you handle times of difficulty and change?

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” Psalm 37:5

“Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” Psalm 40:4

There’s Beauty in Work

As we are coming down to the end of the week, most are ready to divorce themselves from the idea of and the word work. Looking forward to the weekend ahead, attaching oneself to the daily grind is the last thing on the mind.

But today I want to encourage you just in case the daily grind has been grinding too hard, and you may feel a little discouraged – there is beauty in the work that you do. Your labor, assignments, business, and service you do for others matters and is to be respected.

Now, before you take a weary second glance at the words beauty and work coming together as one in the title, I want you to consider a few things that make work beautiful. But before we get to that, I want to reassure you that work is something many struggle with daily. Even the most stout-hearted and dedicated individuals will have times when they must muster up their willpower and grudgingly, get on with their day.

Work is honorable. In the very beginning, when God created Adam, one of the first things He did was give Adam jobs to do such as grounds to till and animals to name (Genesis 2:15, 19, 20).

Our Heavenly Father is a worker, and He has never promoted laziness or idleness amongst His children (see Proverbs 6:6, 9-11; 2 Thessalonians 3:10, and many more).

He is a very on-purpose God, and I believe being made in His image that we are people of purpose. We each have tasks that we can do and, in their doing, we can bring glory to our Heavenly Father (Colossians 3:23, 24).

Work produces. One of my favorite things to watch on streaming devices is videos about modern homesteading. And if I have learned anything from them it is this, if you are going to venture into this lifestyle, to have any sort of farm or productive garden and the like, it is going to take work, and lots of it.

But at the end of it all, my friends, there is a harvest. And it is only through the effort one puts into what they do that will allow them to see a reward in the end.

Your work doesn’t have to involve farmwork to reap a harvest of produce. Production comes from the efforts of any work be it at home with the kids, behind a desk in the office, in the operating room, walking the police beat, or any of the multitudes of services of employment offered through and to people.

Whatever and wherever your place of employment finds you, you will produce a result from what you put into a job well done.

And when that job is well done, it brings not only productivity and harvests, but it brings its own measure of satisfaction.

Two of my favorite times of the day are in the morning when the day is still new and there’s nothing but possibilities ahead. And then there is the tucking in at night when the jobs of the day are done. It is with great satisfaction that I put the day to rest knowing that I did my best, knowing that none of my work is in vain.

Work is not an ugly word. It is very beautiful and what comes at the end of it, no matter what form it takes, is very beautiful as well.

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

“… This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord…” Ezekiel 1:28

Whatever you may think you know about our Heavenly Father, no matter how deeply you have studied and pondered, my friend, even if you have spent years uncovering the riches of His Word (we don’t take away, but celebrate your devotion to the Word), all you or I can know only amounts to a small snapshot.

All the knowledge that has been acquired is only a drop in the ocean of the vastness of who He is. All that one could think or envision of our great God still can only be qualified as indescribable.

Ezekiel, a man privileged to see the things of heaven that we could only possibly dream about, still could not properly articulate the true glory of God. His description was basic compared to what his eyes really saw because God’s glory cannot be defined, described, or fully understood with our human scope of perception.

All one can do is live this life with a holy expectation. Live so that you may see beyond the human descriptions. Live in a way that your own eyes can behold His infinitely royal beauty, take in His true wonder, and view the fullness of His majesty for yourself.

One day, all the layers of living in this world that blur our clear vision of God will be pulled back. One day, we will no longer wonder. We will see God face-to-face for ourselves. Oh, what a day that will be when we experience the full revelation of our God!

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12

“And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” Revelation 22:4

You Are Special and Wonderfully Made

Yes, you, dear one, are special. You are made completely wonderful in the eyes of our God (Psalm 139:14). You are a unique creation. You are designer original. There is no one quite like you because you are specially made to be, well…, you.

So, to what others may think. When the Lord fashioned you, He knew your characteristics and the way you would think. Don’t hide them but celebrate those tidbits of you that make up you.

Perfection, according to others, you may not be, but God sees more in you than you could ever believe. Grab hold of that beautiful truth, my friend. Let it rest deep in your heart. Let it permeate the crevices of your mind. You are His. He created you. Before you were even a concept in the womb of your mother, before the new beginnings of life were imagined, God beautifully knew you (Jeremiah 1:5).

Whether you believe it or not, you are so indescribably special to the Father above. When He sat molding you, one can only imagine the time He took to make you perfectly the beautiful you that you are.

At the potter’s wheel, He framed your purpose. He built inside wonderful gifts. With much care and attention, He fashioned you.

Run with the thought of all you are to Him today. Let the truth of His perfect design for you prompt you to continue to move forth in faith to where He is calling you, because you are specially made for this.

Nothing about you was left to chance. You are here on purpose and with a purpose, especially designed for you. Can you see it? Can you awaken your heart to believe it?

The battering of this world can speak so harshly against God’s design. But designed you are, and as long as you have it in your heart to believe in the wonderful you He created you to be, you can take on this day and His will for your life in confidence without missing a beat.

Whatever comes your way, be reminded of the unique love the Father has for you, and lay to rest everything else that speaks contrary to His truth.

Embracing Peace and Refusing Strife

“It is an honour for a man to cease from strife…” (Proverbs 20:3). There are some things we do not have to welcome into our lives. There are contentions we can choose to ignore. Some arguments don’t need our rebuttal.

Peace is so often forfeited because of the need for one to interject their opinions or to get involved in the things that matter much for nothing except to stir up the pot of strife.

Stop. Do not allow yourself to be pulled into what is fruitless. It is easy to offer your voice in a matter, but some things do not require your voice or participation.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). If it is not promoting peace and seeking a resolution of love, walk away. Where there is one who consistently seeks to disturb the fruit of the Spirit bearing peace (Galatians 5:22), pluck not from their branches, no matter how savory or sweet the delicacy may seem.

As a child of God, stopping and viewing this situation through the eyes and heart of God will help us to make loving decisions. Prayerfully take inventory of the situation before you, and ask, “Where is this leading?” “What end is this trying to bring about?” “What motives are seeking manifestation through personal involvement in this?”

If there is a negative response to these questions, then there will be negative fruit and actions as a result. Stop now, my friend. Refuse to attend the argument. Refuse to waste the precious resource and gift of today by not sowing into things that end in bitterness and strife.

There are 86,400 seconds given to us on this day. Each one is precious. Each one is to be cared for like the treasure it is. Each one is so important that it should not be wasted on things that tear down, on things that promote the opposite of God’s will for your life. Instead, Colossians encourages us to, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful” (3:15).

Your moments. Your seconds, minutes, and days can be used for better things, more worthy of your precious time, other than discord. There is a special beauty in choosing to stop getting involved in what is fruitless and start promoting things that edify.

Instead of involvement in contentions, let us focus more on the giving of love. Giving of those things that beautifully promote grace and life. And the giving of those things that seek for peace.
