Of tomatoes and candies… what an opener, but it would be so true. For that is where this article begins. Simple encounters with passing conversations that started over tomatoes and candies with women who were strangers, but sparked intergenerational wisdom and respect into my life.

My friends, there are many things people will tell you get better with age: wine (although I don’t partake), cheese (I have never tried making my own yet, but I want to), a properly seasoned piece of cast iron (I am currently working on mine to get it there), and so much more, including life skills.

It is the latter of these that I want to bring to our attention. The experiences people gain over their years of living make them somewhat of a repository of information for others to glean and learn from. Something, I believe, that should not be quickly ignored or tossed to the side. And as useful as a good seasoned cast iron pan is, I would truly have to say that one of the greatest things that gets better with age is people.

Over this past weekend, I had the pleasure of holding extended conversations in the middle of stores with women who were my seniors (and yes, these conversations started with tomatoes and candy – smile). Two different accounts, from two different women, in two different stores. And can I tell you, I am the one who walked away richer for those experiences. These women put a smile on my face, as strangers to strangers, just sharing stories, tidbits of life, family tales, and more. Little did they know, in their own little way, they inspired me. Not in one particular thing, but rather just through the experience of getting a chance to chat with them and hear their stories, share adventures, and take in that golden inspiration they offer.

These encounters stuck with me even more when I heard a message following those encounters reiterating the need to take care and listen to the wisdom of those who have tested the waters before us. Those who have had experiences, trials, and life stories to share, that if we listen to, we can learn from by being inspired to try new things, look at situations differently, or even avoid some of their mistakes.

Proverbs 20:29 says, “The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.” That “grey head” carries the marks of a life lived. In that living are tales and accounts they could tell you of ups and downs, of things we may never see or experience, of histories that have gone before, of how to deal with and get through certain aspects of life, even the unpleasant parts.

Picking up books and searching the internet for articles are great, but we have these treasures in the senior members of our communities, families, and churches who may hold a wealth of knowledge and answers for the things we are concerned about or the information we need.

Some use the expression “age before beauty,” and rightly so, but I say there is beauty in the aged. Don’t take it for granted. Dig deeper, ask questions, hold those conversations, and you may have some of that senior wisdom imparted into your own life while putting a smile on their face.

Journeys

Friend, as we are drawing closer to the end of this year, contemplating days and times past, realize through it all our Heavenly Father has been present, even when we could not comprehend everything or feel Him. Journeys take us through many avenues of life – some roads bring pleasure and some pain. But the journey we take with Him shall never be in vain. With God, we are never forsaken or need to feel dismayed. He is our ever-present Rock to stand up and Refuge to tuck ourselves away when the cares of this life seem too much. God, our Heavenly Father, loves you. Look to Him when you can’t figure it out. He’s there, and He’s waiting: “And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

The Gift of the 5 Senses

The world may mix many sorrows in the pot, but God magnifies the beauty of life. Even the small things we could almost dismiss and count them as mundane. But the regular, normal, everyday stuff is not to be overlooked. For in them, we find a simplicity to be grateful for.

Take for instance something as simple as our five senses that fill our lives with wonder that we may miss otherwise. Touch. Sight. Hearing. Smelling, and taste. Oh, how these simple things enrich our lives. They allow us to feel the warmth of a hug, the soft texture of a comforting blanket, grass beneath our feet, or the petting of our favorite furry friend.

They open our eyes to see beauty budding in the Spring, a smile on a loved one’s face, flecks of color in the eyes of one adored, a sunrise dancing off the shores.

They allow us to hear music and laughter, words read aloud, voices we love to hear that are near, and birds singing their morning song in the trees above.

Our nose welcomes the smell of a fresh breeze, the fragrance of roses from the heart of your love, scents that only a baby possesses, and aromas coming from homemade oven-baked delectables that make our tastebuds rejoice at the anticipation of partaking of their sumptuous fare.

Little things. Simple things. Mundane things. But, oh so wonderful things. They are all around us. They are all a part of life. Let’s not ignore their benefits to our living, but recognize each gift they bring: “If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body?” 1 Corinthians 12:17-19.

No matter how much or how little of these sweet and simple reminders we get to experience here, it is my belief that the expansion of all they add to our lives will be even more astounding when we enter that heavenly realm. For we are told in Scripture, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” 1 Corinthians 2:9.

The simplicity and joy we find in our five senses here will only be magnified when, through them, we experience fully the wonders of heaven.

“For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.” – Isaiah 64:4

“Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!” – Psalm 31:19

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” – Psalm 16:11

Porch Moments

At the time of this writing, I have a sink full of dishes waiting for me to tend to them. Normally my routine is to stay caught up on chores such as these, but this day, I decided the dishes could wait.

As we are coming down to the end of the warmer season, I have felt the drive in me to make sure I grab bits of it to savor before it all goes to sleep for the winter. So sometimes, things I want done, according to my normal routine, can wait because the days of enjoying lounging with a book on the porch are going to be fewer, and then down to none, the closer we draw deeper into the changing seasons.

And that’s okay. The book of Ecclesiastes tells us about a time for everything and of the different seasons under the sun (Ecclesiastes 3:1-13). Everything has its proper place in our lives, including the enjoyment of grabbing these small, but significant moments.

As we are coming into what I call our “tucking in” time, and as the days of their cold seem to hang around well past their prime, we will yearn and wish for these “porch moments”. We will plan, dream, and look forward to revisiting these simple pleasures of life.

While each season brings its own pleasures and reasons for gratefulness, the ones we can’t touch during that time are the ones we ponder about, wishing we had grabbed more of those momentary pleasures.

Life really adds up to something beautiful when we find the value in every day we have been given, regardless of the season. But while we are here, enjoy what’s before you today. Invest in the time you have with those you love and spend time with them now.

It is inevitable that the seasons of life will change. So today, step into whatever your “porch moment” is and enjoy the gift of that present time that God has blessed you with.

Life is not all about work, pursuing, or being all that you can be. Those are important and have their place on our schedules. But so do rest, and just taking a free moment to breathe, step back, and enjoy this beautiful life God has given. We are here. Look up from your work – not to be lazy or idle, but to make space in it all to simply savor your own “porch moment”, whatever it may look like. For one day, you’ll wish you had.

There is good to be found in every moment God has given.

“I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.” – Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

“There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.” – Ecclesiastes 2:24

A Light from Heaven

Lord, I thank You for the day You shined Your light into my life. Perfection is far from where I was. I, too, was in a fit of rebellion, intent on getting to my Damascus to do what I was pleased to do. But one day, You interrupted all of that in a good way. You introduced me to Your Son, Jesus. Humbly, I had no choice but to hear that voice that called out to me and fall to the earth in worship and gratefulness that You took the time to step in the pathway progressing to more sin and spoke in me a life brand new.

Friends, if you are a Christian, then you have been in Saul’s position. While we may not stand guilty of persecuting the Church, we all once stood guilty before grace. We were all miscreants without the benefit of mercy. Transgressors while ignoring the truth. On our way to being up to no good, we were hell-bound until Jesus stepped in and saved us.

Romans 5:8 reminds us, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Who we were, does not compare with what He did for us. But isn’t that the point? Never would we have been able to pay the debt we owed. Never could we earn our way to heaven. Only by “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24) are we able to say today that we are saved, born-again believers, washed in the blood of the Lamb, welcomed as a member of His holy family, and given a new life with a new purpose.

Sometimes, we absolutely need to remember where we came from and how we got here. It is nothing we can take credit for. But thank God for the day a light from heaven shone in my heart, and He saved me.

“And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” Acts 9:3,4

His Stripes | Healing for Every Area of Life

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

Those words from the prophet Isaiah are words we are reminded of when facing sicknesses or other health crises. It’s the first go-to verse others will use when attempting to encourage those dealing with such maladies. Yet, the Bible doesn’t narrow the power and authority of this verse or its meaning to only travel down the avenue of physical pain and/or illness. No, my friend. Its scope and range are mighty for so much more.

Healing is not limited to only what the body is dealing with. As a whole person, we may have other areas that may seem out of whack that need the touch of the Savior’s sacrificing blood to flow toward its troubles and restore, fix, and yes, heal, whatever ails a person.

What’s to stop the power of His sacrifice from flowing into the crevices of relationships or to help in any number of places and with the many decisions we face, along with the hope of health for the body?

The stripes that tore His flesh cannot be confined to just the healing of the flesh. Today, when you think of the word healing, what area of your life instantly comes to mind at this moment? It may be a physical illness that you are dealing with, and I stand in prayer with you over it. But, does something else come to mind? A hurt that is not physical? Resoration sought in another area? His stripes come to heal all areas of our lives, and I pray for the places where you need His healing touch, be it heart, mind, body, life, relationships, or wherever. Don’t limit the power of His sacrifice. Do not limit the impact this great word and promise can have in your life.

Whatever came to mind when I asked you, “when you think of the word healing, what comes to mind?”, even this, even that thing that instantly came to mind, He is able to heal and cure the worst of it.

O Lord, we pray, that You would touch us and keep us under Your healing flow, no matter what issues we may encounter today. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I pray, AMEN!

He Knows Your Walking!

“He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.” Deuteronomy 2:7

He knows your walking. Every step you take has His attention. The wilderness comes with many perils. The wilderness can be a place of lack, yet God reminds His people, “thou hast lacked nothing,” Deut. 2:7.

What wilderness are you in right now? Our God knows. Does your desert place bring tears? Is companionship missing in your world? Nothing is hidden from the eyes of our Father. The steps you take in this weary land are marked with His supreme knowledge.

When Moses rehearsed their traveling through this land, he reminded them of the good times and the bad – and yet, through it all, God saw their walking. As His beloved, He knew where they were and what they were dealing with.

The same can be said for each of us. God sees the paths we take. He sees the trudging through the murky times. He sees the hard roads traveled. He recognizes that every trip is not a time of prancing through the peaceful meadows, but there are hills to climb, some slippery, some steep. He recognizes the sweat and the effort it takes to keep going. He sees every choice, every footfall.

My friends, some days when we walk it seems we are walking through a river of tears, walking in waters too deep with currents that are too strong. But the encouragement for our souls is it is not lost on our God and no step we take is wasted. Every step in the right direction, regardless of how hard it may be, will lead to our place of promise.

Some days it may seem that we are walking in circles – not sure what we are doing or where we are going. But while we are walking, we can walk with hope. We can walk in faith (yes, even if you can’t feel it, we can still step out in faith by just moving forward). We can walk in the confidence in the victory that lay ahead for us.

In the unsure moments, the disappointing moments, and the hurting moments, He sees it all.

Knowing that God sees me walking through this great wilderness brings a special measure of comfort to my soul. The wilderness may take its toll on you, and it may even make us question some things along the way – but, even then, and even there, our steps are known. Our hearts can be filled with this great truth even in the wilderness.

My friends, we hold so much in us while we are walking through this wilderness. We experience so much in this dry place. Each of us has encountered a wilderness area we may be walking through, have walked through, or are about to walk through. It is in this season of life, that the struggle from day to day can be overwhelming. For some, you have walked so long and so far, that you may feel like you are lost in a desert. But, no matter what stage of your walking, God still sees you. His eyes have not left you and His heart is for you.

The Beauty of Life

Father God, I thank You for the beauty of life. Everywhere we look around us in our world we see evidence of the goodness You planned for us from the beginning.

As the winds blow and the trees sway in their breeze, we see the natural changes of weather You put on display.

When the birds chirp and cover their babies in the nest, we see the natural order of caring to provide for the life of the young ones.

The squirrels gather to sustain them through winter and their antics put a smile on our faces.

The rain pours to water the greatest cities and the most hidden gardens, gracing us from on high.

The mountains stand at attention showing the extraordinary work of the Almighty. And the valley below invites us to meander in its meadows and enjoy the life God has blessed us with.

The heavenly lights glisten in the sky, reminding us of the grandeur of this marvelous design.

In this life, You have given us so many wonders to behold. In this life, Your Spirit is loving on us from above.

While evil and confusion may try to paint an ugly picture, the beauty of this life cannot be marred because its beauty comes from You, and there is no blemish in Your great goodness, in the original creation You meant for all this to be.

Today, we look past the wrong and see everything God designed to be right. If you look, you will see the beauty. You will feel the beautiful life God wanted you to have from the beginning.

Every breath that we breathe is a joy, and it speaks with His love that life is here, and today, I declare, it is beautiful!

Come closer. Enjoy the experience, and “taste and see that the LORD is good . . .” (Psalm 34:8).

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.” Psalm 23:6
