Beauty in the Aged

Of tomatoes and candies… what an opener, but it would be so true. For that is where this article begins. Simple encounters with passing conversations that started over tomatoes and candies with women who were strangers, but sparked intergenerational wisdom and respect into my life.

My friends, there are many things people will tell you get better with age: wine (although I don’t partake), cheese (I have never tried making my own yet, but I want to), a properly seasoned piece of cast iron (I am currently working on mine to get it there), and so much more, including life skills.

It is the latter of these that I want to bring to our attention. The experiences people gain over their years of living make them somewhat of a repository of information for others to glean and learn from. Something, I believe, that should not be quickly ignored or tossed to the side. And as useful as a good seasoned cast iron pan is, I would truly have to say that one of the greatest things that gets better with age is people.

Over this past weekend, I had the pleasure of holding extended conversations in the middle of stores with women who were my seniors (and yes, these conversations started with tomatoes and candy – smile). Two different accounts, from two different women, in two different stores. And can I tell you, I am the one who walked away richer for those experiences. These women put a smile on my face, as strangers to strangers, just sharing stories, tidbits of life, family tales, and more. Little did they know, in their own little way, they inspired me. Not in one particular thing, but rather just through the experience of getting a chance to chat with them and hear their stories, share adventures, and take in that golden inspiration they offer.

These encounters stuck with me even more when I heard a message following those encounters reiterating the need to take care and listen to the wisdom of those who have tested the waters before us. Those who have had experiences, trials, and life stories to share, that if we listen to, we can learn from by being inspired to try new things, look at situations differently, or even avoid some of their mistakes.

Proverbs 20:29 says, “The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.” That “grey head” carries the marks of a life lived. In that living are tales and accounts they could tell you of ups and downs, of things we may never see or experience, of histories that have gone before, of how to deal with and get through certain aspects of life, even the unpleasant parts.

Picking up books and searching the internet for articles are great, but we have these treasures in the senior members of our communities, families, and churches who may hold a wealth of knowledge and answers for the things we are concerned about or the information we need.

Some use the expression “age before beauty,” and rightly so, but I say there is beauty in the aged. Don’t take it for granted. Dig deeper, ask questions, hold those conversations, and you may have some of that senior wisdom imparted into your own life while putting a smile on their face.

She Builds Her House

I believe we are a DIY nation. To some extent, that’s not a bad thing. People have learned ways and methods to get things done, while in the process, saving money and finding joy in the pleasure of taking on such projects, learning their way through it to fully execute it.

But some of the things we need to be most mindful of building cannot be found in a box or a creative idea. They must, with careful consideration, be approached with special awareness, carefulness, and love to ensure a proper build.

The Bible says “Every wise woman buildeth her house…” Proverbs 14:1. Rest assured, it is not a physical building we are called to hammer and nail (but if that is your skill set, good on you). But the actual construction of a house caused me to pause and ponder a few things.

One thing I realized is that for any house or building to be strong, there must be a good, strong foundation. Anything built on something less will not stand the test of time (see Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49).

There, one must ask themselves what kind of foundation they are laying for their house. Is it laid in truth? Is it poured with love? Is it smoothed out properly and settled in the care you have to hold and support those around you?

In just dealing with the basics of building next, we understand that there are walls needed in the building of a house. Strong walls show that you care and want to protect those in your dwelling. Unbuilt or broken walls give the enemy access to what’s yours. So, as Nehemiah said, “Let us rise up and build” Nehemiah 2:18.

Spiritually, we must stand in the gap as walls protecting what is ours. This will mean laboring in prayer, and sometimes fasting, and staying fortified for ourselves in His Holy Word that you may surround, step in, and cover others in their times of need.

Lastly in a physical building but first spiritually, we have the roof. Every house, no matter the design, needs a roof built on top of it. While this top can act like a covering of protection in much the same way as walls do, when I think of topping this house, I am thinking along the lines of spiritual authority. And of course, that authority comes by way of God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Is He the head or the top of your life? Because if He’s not, it would be very hard to build, help, and encourage others toward Him when we have not fully submitted to Him for ourselves.

James tells us, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you,” James 4:7.

James also tells us, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you…” (4:8), and again, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (4:10).

All these work toward building that roof – acknowledging God’s authority over our lives.

Some areas may be harder than others to relinquish total authority, but in all areas, God must be Lord.

Her relationship with the Lord is key above all else, and in maintaining a healthy spiritual relationship with Him, she can support and oversee the maintenance of her own house.

A wise woman seeks to build a house that will stand because she cares, and in doing so, she takes careful measures to ensure that she builds her house properly.

His Stripes | Healing for Every Area of Life

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

Those words from the prophet Isaiah are words we are reminded of when facing sicknesses or other health crises. It’s the first go-to verse others will use when attempting to encourage those dealing with such maladies. Yet, the Bible doesn’t narrow the power and authority of this verse or its meaning to only travel down the avenue of physical pain and/or illness. No, my friend. Its scope and range are mighty for so much more.

Healing is not limited to only what the body is dealing with. As a whole person, we may have other areas that may seem out of whack that need the touch of the Savior’s sacrificing blood to flow toward its troubles and restore, fix, and yes, heal, whatever ails a person.

What’s to stop the power of His sacrifice from flowing into the crevices of relationships or to help in any number of places and with the many decisions we face, along with the hope of health for the body?

The stripes that tore His flesh cannot be confined to just the healing of the flesh. Today, when you think of the word healing, what area of your life instantly comes to mind at this moment? It may be a physical illness that you are dealing with, and I stand in prayer with you over it. But, does something else come to mind? A hurt that is not physical? Resoration sought in another area? His stripes come to heal all areas of our lives, and I pray for the places where you need His healing touch, be it heart, mind, body, life, relationships, or wherever. Don’t limit the power of His sacrifice. Do not limit the impact this great word and promise can have in your life.

Whatever came to mind when I asked you, “when you think of the word healing, what comes to mind?”, even this, even that thing that instantly came to mind, He is able to heal and cure the worst of it.

O Lord, we pray, that You would touch us and keep us under Your healing flow, no matter what issues we may encounter today. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I pray, AMEN!
